Make Your First Organic Garden A Success

Gardening is more than decorating. It’s more than just a simple activity for a green-thumbed hobbyist. It is a great way to for one to relax, and to enjoy and appreciate nature. The effects can be profound if you’re good at it.

Clay Soil

It can be very hard to shovel clay soil, especially when it sticks to your shovel as you are working. Take the hard work out of using a shovel in clay soil by rubbing a light coat of car or floor wax over the surface with a clean cloth and buff the surface. This causes the clay to slide rather than stick, and prevents rust as a side effect.

Think about starting plants in pots, and then placing the seedlings in the garden later. By allowing them to sprout first, you are increasing the odds of a seedling reaching maturity. This method also gives you the freedom of tightening time periods between each planting. Once you remove the most recent mature plants from your garden, the seedlings are immediately ready to be planted.

The handles on your gardening tools can be used as a convenient measuring instrument. Large handled tools like rakes, hoes or shovels may be used like measuring sticks. After laying the handles on the floor, run the measuring tape along beside them. It’s a good idea to label distances with a permanent marker. When you are gardening next, you’ll have a ruler beside you at all times.

Brighten your garden with biennials and annuals. These biennials and annuals are fast-growing, and they allow you to brighten up your flower bed with a change for each season. They can make a handy, gap-filler between shrubs and perennials located in sunny areas. Some plants to get you started include petunia, marigold, sunflower, rudbekcia, and cosmos.

When you mow your lawn, do not mow it close to the ground. If you leave more height to your grass, the roots will grow deeper into the soil, making the lawn stronger and more resistant to drying out. Cutting your grass too short will cause it to dry out and turn brown in patches throughout your yard.

Prior to planting a garden, think through what you want to do. It will be easy to remember where each plant is when sprouts start to shoot up the following spring. In addition, some plants are so small you might forget you planted them once all your plants sprout. Planning stops these plants from getting lost in the crowd.

Fresh mint is a wonderful addition to a herb garden, but it can quickly take over your entire yard. Rein in their growth by planting the mint in a large pot or garden container instead. Bury the container so that your plant does not stand out. The container will keep the roots from spreading too far.

Don’t use broad-spectrum pesticides for your garden. These pesticides can also kill useful insects that eat your pests. Beneficial insects are more susceptible to strong pesticides than the insects you are actually trying to get rid of. This will lead you to end up killing off the good bugs in your garden, leaving the field wide open for the harmful ones. Your problem will only get worse and you will find yourself using more pesticides.

The sun can cause irreparable skin damage; therefore, it is essential to dress accordingly when horticulture. Choose hats with overlapping brims, don those sunglasses and smear on the sunscreen. By protecting yourself from the sun’s rays, you lower your risk of getting sunburns or skin cancer.

Heather is a magnet for friendly insects. Heather is desirable to bees; when heather emerges in early spring, it can be a source of nectar. Spiders, ground beetles and other insects helpful to your garden tend to live in a heather bed, because heather beds are generally undisturbed. Keep this in mind and always wear gloves when you prune your heather!

Be efficient when working in your garden. Have your tools laid out in an orderly way so you do not have to search for them. Prepare all of your tools prior to working in the garden, and then put them away neatly when finished. Wear pants with several pockets or use a tool belt.

Apply the wisdom of the preceding paragraphs to return vigor and vibrancy to your garden. When you look at your plants growing and producing beautiful flowers and fruit, you’ll be able to reap the rewards! Gardening can work wonders on a hectic and stressful lifestyle, and provide many benefits to just about anyone willing to work at it, so get outside and enjoy.
