Many people get into organic gardening since they fear the toxic effects of commercial pesticides and fertilizers, both on the environment and their health. Make the most of the time spent in your garden. Don’t spend 30 minutes searching for a tool. Prepare all the tools you need before you go out to work on your garden, and put them away nicely when you are done. You can use a tool belt, or you may want to wear pants with extra pockets.

Don’t let your organic gardening tasks stack up for very long. Even if you are too busy to tend to your gardens needs every day, you can try little things that will prevent you from having a lot of work when you return to your garden. If you put the dog outside, weed a few spots in the garden while your dog goes to the bathroom.

When composting lawn clippings, leaves, and other materials, it is best to add the same amount of green, freshly-cut material as you do dried material. Examples of good green material to use for compost include grass clippings, flowers, leaves, and weeds. Sawdust, straw, cardboard, paper and wood pulp are all examples of dried plant material. Avoid ashes, meat, charcoal and diseased plants in your compost.

When planting seeds, you should bury them three times as deep as their actual size. There are exceptions to this rule, however. Some seeds should remain uncovered because they thrive in direct sunlight. Petunias and ageratum are two examples of seeds that require sunlight. Always be sure to check online or with the company you’re purchasing the seeds from as to their sunlight needs.

A good thing to know when it comes to your organic garden, and running it, is to, a couple times a day, lightly ruffle the seedlings with cardboard or your hand. This may sound strange, but research has proven that doing this will help your plants grow bigger than if they were not petted at all.

Vegetable Garden

Brick, stone or untreated wood is great for building raised beds. If you use wood, be sure that it is untreated and naturally rot resistant. Some good choices include locust, cypress, and cedar. Do not use treated wood in your vegetable garden. In the event your vegetable garden already has treated wood as part of its enclosure, consider replacing it, or painting it, or wrapping the treated wood in some protective covering. Keep in mind that if any of the untreated wood is below the ground, you should dig it up to make sure that you completely protect your vegetable garden from the chemicals in the treated wood.
