Ward off certain diseases that plague plants with the use of aspirin. Three aspirins per four gallons of water will help keep your plants healthy. The solution can then be used to spray the entire plant, and will offer protection naturally. Use this method every three weeks.

If you want a sustainable garden, leave part of it undisturbed as a home for the wildlife in the area. This will also benefit your cultivated gardens as it will attract more bugs and birds to pollinate your other plants.

Keep your gardening tools close by to maximize gardening efficiency. Keep the tools in a big bucket, or store them in strong pockets in your pants. Keep your gloves, pruning shears, a hand spade and your other tools handy to quickly and easily do your garden maintenance.

Flower Beds

Put an organic material, such as mulch two or three inches deep, in your flower beds. By doing this, you can lock in moisture, discourage weed growth, and nourish your plants. It will also make your flower beds look more finished.

Put coffee grounds in your soil. They contain nitrogenous nutrients which are essential to plant growth. Nitrogen, along with phosphorous and potassium, is an important nutrient in the garden. It contributes to healthy and strong growth of the plant, but don’t overuse it.

When it’s harvest time, you should utilize a basket that you put laundry in to carry your veggies. The laundry basket is a perfect strainer for any produce run off. Just rinse the produce right in the basket; the water will drain through the holes.

Within your composting heap, ensure that there is an equal split of dried and green plant materials. Add grass clippings, waste from fruits and vegetables, leaves, and weeds for the green materials in your compost pile. Dried plant matter, on the other hand, includes shredded paper, used wood chips and straw. Materials to avoid during composting include diseased plants, meat, ashes and charcoal.

Try using a beer trap to naturally eradicate slugs from your organic garden. Place a jar into the soil so that the top of it’s mouth rests parallel with the soil. Fill this jar up with beer almost entirely. The scent of the beer will bait the slugs into the jar and they will become trapped.

Brick, stone or untreated wood is great for building raised beds. If using wood, make sure it’s naturally rot resistant and untreated. Examples of good woods include cedar, cypress, and locust. Consider the chemicals that will leach out of the wood before choosing anything that has been treated. Remember the affect that such chemicals will have on your plants and soil. If you have to use treated wood, you should line it with a bit of plastic to create a barrier.
