Eat Healthy With Your Own Organic Garden

Organic gardening isn’t as easy as it seems. This is due to the different factors you must learn about when going all natural. Things like pH balance and proper compost and sunlight all take on more importance due to the lack of chemical enhancers. If you are a beginner, take things slowly. You should teach your children how to garden alongside you. A garden can teach your children about the joy of rewarding work and nutrition while bonding.

If you have an organic garden and children, plant some everbearing strawberries for them. Kids are quite eager to pick fruit from a garden, and will help with the planting if they get a nice snack out of it at the end.

Growing Plants

If you are growing plants organically indoors, you have to consider the light that they are getting. If you live in a home or apartment that does not get great sunlight you may want to consider growing plants that are designed to grow in low or medium-light environments. If you do and this does not help, consider investing in some grow-lights.

You can use something like a laundry basket to gather all of your produce together when the time comes. A laundry basket will act as a strainer for your produce. Doing this allows you to both rinse and drain your fresh produce.

Include both green and dry plant refuse in your compost. Green plant material includes grass clippings, spent flowers, vegetable and fruit waste, weeds and leaves. You can add dried plants by throwing straw, shredded paper, woody materials and cardboard on your pile. You should not use things like meat scraps, charcoal, blighted plants or the manure of meat-eating animals in your compost.

If slugs are disrupting the balance of your garden, you can diminish their population by using a beer trap. Get a clean, empty glass jar to use as a trap. Bury it with its mouth facing upwards. Keep putting dirt over the jar until the mouth is at the surface of your garden. Fill the jar with beer about an inch lower than the top. The slugs will be attracted to the beer, and will then become trapped within the jar.

Untreated Wood

If you’d like to create a raised bed, use materials like brick, stone, or untreated wood. For best results, you should only use wood that has not been treated with chemicals or protective coating. Optimal wood choices that fit these criteria are locust, cypress, and cedar. Using untreated wood is especially important for veggie gardens, because chemicals from treated wood could leach into the soil, affecting your food. If you have already used lumber that is treated, you can line it with plastic or another type of barrier.

Mulch your garden to keep the soil nourished. A thick layer of mulch offers protection to the soil underneath it. It protects roots because it helps the soil stay cooler when it’s hot outside. The layer of mulch will also minimize evaporation, reducing your need to water as frequently as you would a garden without mulch. This also helps control the weeds.

Grow some garlic that is organic. The best time to plant garlic is either early spring or in the fall. Plant garlic in moist soil with good drainage. Plant each bulb at least four inches from each other. Bury them about two inches in the soil with their pointed end facing up. Green garlic can be cur directly from the plant and used in a pinch instead of scallions or chives. When the top turns brown, it is time to harvest the bulbs. To harden the bulbs’ skin, dry them for several days in the sun. Store the cloves in a cool area. They can be tied or left loose.

Now, you shouldn’t get your hopes up and believe that a few tips are going to turn you into an instant professional gardener. However, these tips are a great starting point if you do plan to grow organically. As you implement these tips and hone your skills, you’ll be a professional green-thumb-holder in no time.
